The Vehicles for Charity Donation Program is designed so not for profit organizations can benefit directly from individuals who want to donate their vehicle for tax purposes to help their favorite charity. After the vehicle is donated, it is taken to public auction and the proceeds from the sale are donated to the charity selected. The program is easy and provides great benefit to agencies such as A New Leaf.
Frequently asked Questions
Q. How does the program work? A. You may either complete the paperwork online at www.vehiclesforcharity.org or call the donation line (Phoenix area 800-833-3006) When the information is completed, it is forwarded to a tow company who will contact you directly to schedule a pick-up. At the time of pick-up, the driver will issue you a receipt for taking the vehicle and you will give the driver the keys and your signed title.
Q. What do I need to do before I can donate? A. Make sure you have a clear title with your name listed on the front of the owner’s section and have the car keys available.
Q. How long will I have to wait before my car is picked up? A. After we complete the donation pick-up form, which takes less then 10 minutes, we fax the form to the towing company. They will call you within a couple days to schedule a pick-up. It is usually done within 3 to 4 days.
Q. Do I really get a tax write-off and how much will it be? A. As of January 1, 2005, if you plan to deduct over $500, you will be allowed a deduction in the amount of the gross selling price of your vehicle. An envelope will be mailed to you within 30 days of the sale of your vehicle with all the required IRS information and forms. You may also choose to take a deduction under $500 without written acknowledgment. THE NEW GUIDELINES WILL NOT AFFECT THE AMOUNT YOUR CHARITY RECEIVES FOR YOUR DONATION.
Q. How do I determine the value of my vehicle? A. You may use the references listed below to determine the retail value of your vehicle. You will want to deduct from the retail value if you have excessive mileage or needed repairs that would reduce the value of your vehicle.
Q. What is the tax benefit for me to donate my vehicle? A. Please visit the IRS web site at IRS.gov or contact your tax advisor for more information.
