Volunteer Requirements

To volunteer with A New Leaf you must:

  • Be 21 years or older to volunteer in the youth residential programs.
  • Be at least 18 years old to volunteer for clerical, non-client services, or at least 16 at the Child Development Center. Younger children must be accompanied and supervised by parent or guardian.
  • Submit a Volunteer Application and three (3) personal references.
  • Complete a Volunteer Orientation and a one-on-one interview.
  • Commit to volunteering for 6 months, and contribute a minimum of 2 hours per week during that time. Some exceptions may apply.
  • Complete a Volunteer Time Report each time you provide a volunteer service.
  • Most positions working with children require a fingerprinting/background check. ($38.00 charge). Mandatory for Autumn House, Faith House, and the youth residential programs.
  • Positions at the La Mesita’s Child Development Center also require a TB test.

A person may be disqualified and prohibited from serving as a volunteer of A New Leaf if the person has been convicted (including crimes the record of which has been expunged and pleas of "no contest") of a crime of child abuse, sexual abuse of a minor, physical abuse, causing a child’s death, neglect of a child, murder, manslaughter, felony assault, any assault against a minor, kidnapping, arson, criminal sexual conduct or prostitution related crimes; being adjudged liable for civil penalties or damages involving sexual or physical abuse of children; being subject to any court order involving any sexual abuse or physical abuse of a minor, including but not limited to domestic order for protection; had their parental rights terminated; a history with another organization (volunteer, employment, etc.) of complaints of sexual or physical abuse on minors; resigned, been terminated or been asked to resign from a position, whether paid or unpaid, due to complaint(s) of sexual or physical abuse of minors; or, has a history of other behavior that indicates they may be a danger to children.
